Escape the hustle and bustle of the city with a trip to Virginia Highland, just ten minutes from ITW 2019 by taxi.
An area of real contrast, Virginia-Highland (or VaHi to its friends), just to the side of Midtown, is widely considered to be the most beautiful neighbourhood in Atlanta – full of cute little bungalows and cottages, and an eclectic array of shops. It’s definitely a place to pop on your to do list while in town for ITW 2019.
But, if you’re in the market for a breezy and sophisticated night out, you might be surprised.
Yes, it’s home to the Morningside Nature Preserve, which finds 33 gorgeous acres, ripe for hiking or even running, and it’s on the border of the iconic Piedmont Park. But when the sun goes down, Virginia-Highland really knows how to party.
North Highland Avenue is peppered with bars and restaurants, including Atkins Park Tavern, which proudly boasts being the longest-running “continuously licensed tavern” in Atlanta. Head there for a slice of history and a pleasant glass of something hoppy.
You can get excellent Mexican food at The Original El Taco. Then there’s the ever-popular Murphy’s - a restaurant, bakery, and wine shop (phew!). It is widely known for serving up a very decent take on southern classics, with plenty of locals suggesting you shouldn’t leave without sampling the Tollhouse Pie (essentially a chocolate pie).
From there, your evening can be spent sampling even more of the area’s many excellent drinking holes.
The Bookhouse Pub boasts an impressive array of draft beers that demand to be soaked up by the terrific house poutine (French fries covered in beef, gravy, and cheese). The Dark Horse Tavern is known for putting on a heavy metal karaoke night like no other. The Diesel Filling Station is never without an event to keep the crowds enthralled, be it sport on the big screen, a poker night, or a quiz to go with your create-your-own pizza. And Limerick Junction is the oldest Irish Pub in the city, specialising in traditional pub grub and the occasional comedy night.
Just a stone’s throw from where you’re staying for ITW 2019, VaHi is definitely worth a visit.
