According to local lore the name Buckhead derives from the time the area’s owner, one Henry Irby, killed a buck deer and then displayed its head for all to see. Thankfully, from these rather dubious beginnings, Buckhead has grown into an area that now drips with urban sophistication.

Just uptown from Downtown (just a short cab ride away from our ITW venue), in recent years Buckhead has been seen as the “Beverly Hills of the East”, a shopping destination to rival Rodeo Drive. There’s the famous Lenox Square shopping mall, where people emerge from limos to hurl their money in the direction of Gucci and Prada, or J. Crew, Diesel and Zara. Or the Phipps Plaza, where you can really make a day of it. Do some shopping, grab a bite, head to the cinema – without having to blink beneath the dazzle of the Atlanta sun (it’s all indoors).

But, it would be folly to think of Buckhead as just a shopping destination. If you want to you can go for a swim in the pool at Chastain Park, or see what’s cooking at the Buckhead Theater, a top venue for touring artists. Or, most pertinently of all, it’s a place that isn’t lacking in great restaurants and bars.

Those looking for a vibrant night on the tiles wouldn’t be disappointed with a bar-hop around the area, sampling popular local favourites like the Park Bench Pub or Hole in the Wall, and the home of thick-cooked chips that is the Fado Irish Pub.

Equally, the food scene in Buckhead enjoys a rich pedigree. For an upmarket taste of the South, people talk of Addie Mae’s Soup – a rewarding chicken concoction with dumplings – at the Southern Art and Bourbon Bar in borderline-fanatical tones. And though now widely available to the public, the legendary double cheeseburger at Holeman & Finch has long been something worth writing home about, especially if you combine it with a number of their house cocktails.

You’ll find amazing steaks at Chops Lobster Bar, you can lose yourself in shrimp, oysters, lobsters, you name it, at Atlanta Fish Market. Put it this way, you won’t go hungry. Buckhead’s got everything and probably the kitchen sink too.

Whatever you’re looking to do, chances are it’s right there on your doorstep in Buckhead during ITW 2019.
